October 2021 Newsletter

What a disappointment. Only 14 people turned up for our second meeting after such a long time away. Our chairman has asked me to stress that we need to have more bums on seats for the club to survive..
Unfortunately Matthew was unable to get any professional turners to demonstrate this year but he is working hard to find people available for next year.

For this meeting Howard took on the club lathe and showed us how to turn a wooden revolving centre for those delicate jobs where we don’t want a pointy thing making a hole where we don’t want one.
Turning the taper to fit the tail stock looks difficult enough and then to get the end to run on a neat fit is something else.
It takes patience to turn a bit then try it for size several times until it is just right.
With a few minutes left before lunch he turned a simple knob to fit to the lid of those difficult cans to open. Easier to grip.

Keith Leonard took over the lathe for the afternoon and started to turn a bowl from a log of damson cut from a neighbour’s garden. One presumes with his permission doesn’t one!!
I didn’t see the end result as Chris and I had to get away by mid afternoon but this is as far as he had got by then..

Fred in the meantime was demonstrating the work he does on his scroll saw.
A very interesting change when turning projects are not on the go. A couple of pieces of his work are shown in the gallery.

Our next meeting is on Saturday 13th November and it will be another club day.
Not sure who is doing what but I am sure someone will step up and show off his skills.
Come along and see who is brave enough or just turn up for a social day talking about all those wonderful holidays you weren’t able to go on!!

Also, somethiing to think about between now and the AGM in January.
We need someone to fill the huge gap left by our losing Dawn.
A hard act to follow but a necessary part of our year involves organising social events including the annual fish and chip lunch and skittles, the annual dinner and BBQ.
The annual SAW interclub competition is also an important date in our calendar where she always arrived early to set up our display.

Our charity events at Woodlands garden centre are also important dates.
An interesting challenge for someone but you will get help whenever we can.

Secondly Bert wants to take a back seat as chairman after many years of holding this position so we would like to have someone on the committee as deputy chairman.
Bert will stay in the background to help out. He will explain this in more detail at the AGM.

So, looking to forward to seeing you ALL on the 13th.

Graham
